Sharp's latest lighting products combine solar cells and LED technology

C Sharp Electronics has developed a new generation of lighting products that combine solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The company plans to begin marketing two lighting products based on its solar cell technology in November, initially only in Japan.

The first product is an illuminating solar panel based on a crystalline film tandem cell that combines amorphous silicon and crystalline thin-film silicon cells. The LEDs are embedded in the panel. The battery has a conversion efficiency of 7.3%, which, according to Sharp, is 1.5 times higher than conventional shaped silicon cells.

The lifetime of the LED embedded in the panel is 40,000 hours, which is much higher than 1,000 hours for ordinary electronic bulbs and 5,000 to 12,000 hours for fluorescent lamps. This lighting product does not contain dangerous mercury.

The second type of lighting product is a solar street light that incorporates more traditional solar cells with integrated high-density LED lamps . This product does not require ground wiring or overhead wiring. A 34 watt polycrystalline module is integrated with the hardware to create a solar street light.
