National Semiconductor Corporation and Nuventix, Inc. announced a new LED reference design that uses a driver circuit with a thermal management module. This product simplifies the development of high-brightness LED bulbs and makes it easier for users to replace incandescent and small neon lights installed in standard sockets with LED lights.
LED luminaires that replace traditional light bulbs are made up of four different components, namely LEDs, drive boards, thermal management systems, and optical devices. Integrating these four complex components into a high-efficiency, high-performance LED lighting system overcomes many challenges.
This new reference design consists of National Semiconductor's driver board and Nuventix's SynJet cooling module. This combination provides the necessary drive current and thermal management functions for high-performance LED lighting systems, making it an ideal design to replace traditional light bulbs.
Nuventix's SynJet thermal management module uses a synthetic jet cooling technology with a built-in electromagnetic starter that produces a series of turbulent jet streams that reduce the temperature of the LEDs. This method of heat dissipation is not only reliable but also efficient. The SynJet module complies with the installation specifications of standard bulbs such as MR16 and PAR38.
Jim Balthazar, President and CEO of Nuventix, said: The use of SynJet cooling technology in LED lighting systems maximizes the luminous flux output of LEDs and enhances light stability. National's reference design is a plug-and-play solution that enables engineers to quickly complete the design of the entire LED lighting system.
National's driver board includes the LM3429 buck-boost LED driver and the LM2842 regulator. The LM3429 chip can use a 9V to 36V input voltage to provide a constant drive current for the LED, up to 12 LEDs in series, and analog dimming. The LM2842 chip is primarily powered by the SynJet electromagnetic starter. The drive board is sized to meet the requirements of Nuventix's SynJet MR16 and PAR38 modules.
Michael White, vice president of Power Management Products at National Semiconductor, said: With this new design reference, lighting designers can more easily and efficiently design LEDs that are stable and reliable for thermal management of MR16 and PAR38 LED bulbs. Drive System. National Semiconductor has been committed to providing customers with a variety of easy-to-use system solutions, and this collaboration with Nuventix has once again fulfilled our goal.
