Detailed description of the hardware architecture of the mobile payment chip

This article takes N company's typical PN series NFC chip as an example to illustrate the hardware relationship between the NFC chip and peripheral devices.

The payment chip (NFC Controller) is associated with five peripheral hardware, including Host Controller, terminal battery, NFC RF antenna, embedded security module (ie eSE), SIM card.

In reality, the payment chip will be embedded in the mobile phone motherboard. There is sometimes a security chip in the payment chip, which is of course not visible from the outside; if there is no security chip, the payment chip will generally be associated with the SIM card to make the SIM card secure. PN5XX is the model of payment chip, which realizes the data exchange and transmission of near-field communication and non-contact equipment. It is the most essential part of an NFC mobile phone.

The PN6XN is a model that combines a payment chip and a security chip (ie, SE) to package the chip. The PN6XN and the PN5XX are the same size and the same pin position, which makes it easy for the terminal equipment manufacturer to change the template design. Any one of the PN6XN and PN5XX can be used. The chip implements the five important functions of the payment core described in the previous section, namely, building RF channels, making transactions, storing data, downloading cards, and securing security.

As shown in the above figure, the NFC payment chip PN5XX is superimposed with the SE security chip, which becomes a NFC chip that is often seen in the market. The company's new NFC chip is called PN6XN. The operating system carried in the SE security chip is unique to NXP. The non-contact radio frequency related signal reception, transmission, analog-to-digital conversion, etc. are all implemented in the payment chip PN5XX.

In reality, in order to support the five important functions of the payment core, namely, building RF channels, doing transactions, storing data, downloading cards, and ensuring security, SE plays an important role in it, and the latter four functions are implemented in the SE chip.
