Oculus Chief Technology Officer John Carmack revealed a new VR video playback technology and applied it to update Oculus Go and Gear VR. The company is planning to republish the animated short film "Henry", Carmack said it will "set a new benchmark for image quality."
"Henry" is the first VR short film released by Oculus Story Studio of Oculus Studio. Although Henry was originally released as a real-time rendering experience of Rift, pre-rendered version of VR video is provided on Oculus Go and Gear VR.
Carmack said Oculus plans to use the new VR video playback technology to re-release preview VR clips. Carmack is convinced that the playback system will bring unprecedented video quality to such devices, and it could even say that it will "set a new benchmark for immersive video quality." He said that the new system allows playback of 5K x 5K formats at 60 FPS.
Basically, it creates a 2k x 2k baseline, then extracts the core 5k x 2k parts (1k for each eye) and divides it into 10 segments, where only three baselines are decoded at a time. Vsync lock frame release + low latency fast path audio 360 space.
Carmack republishes Henry’s rereleases, and whether the timing of the application of new playback technologies and playback systems will become the basis for existing first-party video applications, or stand-alone products without any indication. We hope this technology can be provided to third-party developers. "Henry" is somewhat similar to Pixar's animation, the audience can join this lonely Hedgehog's birthday party, and follow him busy around the room, prepare cakes and queues, and perhaps find some friends. The recognition of “Henry†for Emmy can inspire more Hollywood directors and executives to explore and invest in the narrative platform of virtual reality, promote the development of VR entertainment, and bring us more outstanding works.
