Internet TV is "too expensive" or "excessive protection"?

In early July, a piece of information caused a heated debate in the field of smart TVs and OTT set-top boxes: the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television demanded against the existing non-compliance of Internet TV, such as the inability to use the USB port to install the corresponding application software, and not to appear on the smart TV platform. Browsers accessing the Internet cannot push application aggregation software, video website clients, or radio application software through the application store or other means. They cannot use application stores or other means to push applications that can remotely play video through indirect mobile phones. The content of Internet TV was integrated to control broadcasting rights. Is the OTT TV industry desperately needing regulation, or is the competent department overprotecting traditional businesses? When chaos meets "big shuffling"

Before June 2014, the OTT TV industry was like a motorcycle with no protection facilities running on the highway. In a few short years, many software and hardware companies have quickly entered this new field through cross-border, multi-screen, cross-network, and cross-platform approaches. However, with the strict industry rectification of the former State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, some of the products of these companies have been halted and rectified.

On October 20, 2011, the former State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) formally issued the requirements for the operation and management of the Internet TV licensee (No. 181) to all licensees holding Internet TV integration services and hold licenses for Internet TV content services. The document stipulates that the Internet TV integration platform can only choose to connect to legal content service platforms established by the Internet Television Content Service Agency approved by the former SARFT. Before providing access services, the Internet TV integration agency should implement the legality of the Internet TV content service platform. Audit check.

In June of this year, the fifteenth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Twelfth National People's Congress examined the draft cyber security law of the People's Republic of China for the first time. The draft mentions that “the competent departments of the State Council’s communications, radio and television, energy, transportation, water conservancy, and finance industries and other relevant departments of the State Council are responsible for directing and supervising the operation and protection of critical information infrastructure in accordance with the responsibilities prescribed by the State Council.”

On June 10 of this year, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Film and Television drafted an internet-based information network dissemination management program for audio-visual programs (revised opinion draft), through the State Council Legislative Affairs Office, and solicited opinions from the public. The draft of the Measures clearly stated that the development of Internet radio and television services should adhere to serving the people, serving socialism, insisting on correct orientation, giving priority to social benefits, promoting the core values ​​of socialism, and observing socialist ethics. The ideological culture that embodies the development of the times and social progress, vigorously promotes the national excellent cultural traditions, provides more and better online radio and television services, satisfies the growing needs of the people, and constantly enriches the spiritual and cultural life of the people.

With the promulgation and strict enforcement of the above-mentioned laws and regulations and the rules and regulations of industry authorities, the China Internet TV, smart TV, and OTT set-top box industries that were originally in the “chaos” will usher in a stage of standardization and development. The structure will also usher in a "big shuffle", and some companies will also stand out and benefit from it.

More open mind meets bigger time window

In the face of the current chaos, both the Internet and TV industry need to reflect.

For online video companies, cross-border is what they are good at, but cross-border needs the bottom line. In fact, such enterprises are often accustomed to the multi-screen interaction of PCs, laptops, tablet computers, and mobile phones. The current "playing method" is on the television side, but in the course of the process, there is a policy inconvenience. Why can we not create new products and businesses for TV users within the existing "rules of the game" from another perspective? If you want to become a company with a long-term vision, you should not be lucky in the past few years. Psychologically, constantly playing the policy of “trimming the ball” not only wastes the company’s resources in vain, but also makes the time window for companies to enter the Internet TV industry smaller and smaller.

For the traditional TV industry, in the violent cross-border of Internet companies, many traditional television industry people are depressed, and some people even think that "we must block the road that video sites infiltrate the living room." This kind of thinking is undoubtedly wrong. The broadcasting and television industry hopes to have the opportunity to integrate with the Internet and industrialize it. This requires a more open mind. It is believed that with the continuous development of supervision, once the Internet TV industry in China has achieved orderly development, it will surely embark on a path of healthy and sustainable development.
