Dong Zhijiang, general manager of Wuhan Diyuan Optoelectronics——
The LED is an electronic direct light-emitting device that consumes only 1/10 of the ordinary incandescent lamp at the same brightness, and can extend the life by 100 times. Dong Zhijiang and his team are developing LED chips.
After attending the 6th China Creative Conference held in 2006, Dong Zhijiang, who has been engaged in optoelectronics for more than 20 years in China, took the team back to Wuhan Donghu Development Zone to start a business and started Wuhan Diyuan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. In the past two years, his LED project has grown rapidly under the favor of several venture capitalists such as the American Tiandi Fund, and the annual sales scale has exceeded 50 million yuan.
Growing up in Wuhan
In 1985, after Dong Zhijiang finished his postgraduate in electrical engineering at Fudan University, he was assigned to the Wuhan Academy of Posts and Telecommunications. Dong Zhijiang was appointed as the team leader. In that year he was 25 years old and was called "the youngest expert in China's photovoltaic industry" by the industry.
At the time, the laser was also a military product. To develop the enterprise, the product must be commercialized. Dong Zhijiang led the team for nearly a decade, and finally successfully developed a high-speed laser, which was the first in the country to commercialize the laser.
In 1993, at the invitation of the California Institute of Technology, he resigned to study blue electro-optical lasers. Two years later, he entered a local large electronics company as the chief scientist of the nitride light-emitting diode project of Alpha Photonics, a NASDAQ-listed company in the United States, to develop blue LEDs.
Learn to manage
"At the time, LEDs were just starting in the United States and belonged to cutting-edge high-end technology." The more advanced, the more Dong Zhijiang is interested. He witnessed the tremendous changes in the industry and he could no longer sit still.
In 2003, the troubled Shanghai Blu-ray Company threw an "Olive Branch" to Dong Zhijiang and asked him to be a manager, but his treatment was far less than his income in the United States. "But this is an opportunity, I must challenge myself." Dong Zhijiang resolutely resigned and formed a small team with the company's partners to Shanghai.
With excellent technology and extensive contacts, Shanghai Blu-ray has quickly returned to life and is growing. Recalling the success of the past, Dong recalled that he seized the "revolutionary tail" and had the opportunity to learn how to manage and run a business. “The manager’s experience is unmatched by any R&D work.â€
Fighting Wuhan again
In 2006, Dong Zhijiang and his teammates keenly realized that the timing of the second industrial revolution of LED is coming: low-power blue light is shifting to high-power lighting.
After attending the 6th Huachuang Conference of the year, Dong returned to the East Lake Development Zone with a small team to start a business, and started the Wuhan Diyuan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. to produce high-power LED chips. It is also the previous experience. In the past two years, it has been favored by several investment companies such as Wuhan Gaoke and American Tiandi Fund, and has grown rapidly.
However, due to the high cost of LEDs, the market price of each LED lamp is 150 yuan, which is much higher than that of ordinary incandescent lamps. "If the price drops, its promotion will be explosive." I made up my mind that I must reduce the LED light to 20 yuan/only within three years. â€
