Diodes Introduces Piezoelectric Acoustic Driver PAM8904

21ics Diodes Incorporated introduced the piezoelectric acoustic driver PAM8904, which integrates a multi-mode charge pump boost converter to drive piezoelectric sounders up to 18Vpp at 3V. The drive boosts volume with low operating current and offers a wide input signal range from 20Hz to 300kHz for battery-powered products such as medical systems, alarm clocks and security devices.

Operating at a fixed frequency of 1MHz and a supply voltage range of 2.3V to 5.5V, the PAM8904 can drive up to 15nF of the sounder load, providing an output voltage of 9V and minimizing component footprint. The charge pump is capable of operating in 1x, 2x and 3x modes, allowing designers to choose from three different piezoelectric sound pressure levels.

This acoustic driver features automatic shutdown and wake-up to help keep low current consumption and extend battery life. For example, in 1x mode, the device consumes only 300μA of dynamic current, plus an input voltage of 3V and an input frequency of 4kHz, which can drive a 15nF piezoelectric. The quiescent current of the device in shutdown mode is less than 1μA.

To ensure product reliability, the PAM8904 offers low inrush current, low EMI drive technology, and a variety of integrated protection features such as thermal shutdown, overcurrent, overvoltage, and undervoltage lockout.

The piezoelectric acoustic driver PAM8904 is available in a space-saving U-QFN3030 package.
