Packaged compact Osram's latest chip stacking technology helps infrared

The infrared Platinum Dragon from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has a small light-emitting area but a very high brightness. The LED's thin-film chip is only 1 mm2 and is fabricated by chip-stacking technology. With a drive current of 1 A, the optical output power can reach about 1 W, which is almost twice that of the current standard chip. Equipped with different standard secondary optics, this LED produces different viewing angles and radiant intensities, especially for applications requiring high brightness, small volume light sources such as pedestrian protection systems and car night vision systems.

This new Platinum Dragon has such excellent brightness, thanks to a special film chip. It has more than one PN junction, but has two interfaces, one of which is “joined” or “stacked” on top of the other, resulting in nearly twice the optical output power of conventional infrared thin film chips. Harry Feltges, infrared component marketing manager at Osram Opto Semiconductors' German headquarters, said: "We are able to launch the infrared Stack Dragon so quickly, thanks to our experience in developing laser cascading technology. In addition, the new infrared LEDs are identical to other infrared Dragon components. The package is so designed that the existing design can be used without any changes. The forward voltage is 2.9 V at 1 A operating current, so standard LED drivers suitable for this voltage range can be used. This infrared LED has an emission wavelength of 850 nm, which is between the maximum spectral sensitivity of the CCD and CMOS cameras and the visibility of the naked eye.

The infrared Platinum Dragon with high brightness and high brightness is the ideal lighting solution for small space applications. The car night vision system, pedestrian protection system and pre-crash sensor can also be made more compact because fewer infrared LEDs are available to provide the same optical output power. For industrial applications, this high-power infrared LED can be used for lighting components of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras or built into the Automatic License Plate Recognition System (ANPR). Three-dimensional camera technology is another feasible application that will be gradually applied to consumer devices such as gaming platforms and televisions to achieve gesture recognition. This type of application requires a high modulation frequency (typically 20 to 50 MHz), which is easily achieved with the new Infrared Dragon.
