The game console market has recently experienced a complicated situation. Last month, the market was still the "three countries" situation - Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One and the relatively poor performance of Nintendo Wii U together to share the main market share. But now, the first two companies have launched a new generation of products on the original platform, while Nintendo is poised to create a new host.
Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo three host PK
Here are the performance evaluations and comparisons of these new hosts:
Xbox One S (currently listed)
Microsoft Xbox One S
Specifications: AMD Jaguar eight-core processor; AMD Radeon GPU, clock frequency 914MHz; DDR3 8G memory; Ultra High Definition Blu-ray player
Evaluation: Xbox One's remake, 40% smaller in size, built-in power supply, ultra-high definition Blu-ray player, compatible with HDR display. In order to achieve HDR, the clock frequency of the image processor is slightly increased, but the effect is not significant. Currently only four Xbox One games can output HDR pictures. The Xbox One S cannot support 4K resolution games, but can upgrade non-4K content to play on 4K displays. The game handle is slightly improved, and the Bluetooth support effect and grip feel are better.
Price: 2TB version, 349 GBP/399 USD/399 EUR; 1TB version, 299 GBP/349 EUR; 500 GB version, 249 GBP/299 USD/299 EUR.
PlayStation 4 Slim (sold on September 16)
Sony PS4 thin version
Specifications: AMD Jaguar eight-core processor; AMD next-generation Radeon GPU, computing power 1.84teraflops (teraflops per second); GDDR5 8G memory.
Evaluation: "Slimming" version of the PS4, a 40% reduction in volume, but performance is not affected. The new machine is equipped with an upgraded version of the Dual Shock handle, and a breathing light bar is added above the control panel for the player to see. Both the power consumption rate and the fan noise are improved, and the 5GHz WiFi speed is faster. Due to the removal of the digital audio interface, the connection to audio devices such as home theater systems, Bluetooth headsets, etc. is limited (although HDMI data lines can achieve output sound signals). Support HDR screen.
Price: 500G version, 259 GBP/299 USD/299 EUR; 1TB version (listed on 9.29 days), 309.99 GBP (USD price is unknown).
PlayStation 4 Pro (listed on November 10)
Sony PS4 Pro
Specifications: AMD Jaguar 8-core single-chip custom processor; AMD next-generation Radeon GPU, computing power 4.20 teraflops (teraflops per second); GDDR5 8G memory: support for 4K video and games.
Evaluation: Positioned as a high version of the PS4, the PS4 Pro has been upgraded in terms of processing performance and image display, supporting 4K, with the PSVR head display use more smooth. Although most games cannot reach the full 4K standard (no more than 30 frames per second), users should be able to gain better visual effects than current 1080p HD games (unless they originally had 4K monitors). Some current PS4 games will also give players a better experience due to configuration upgrades. PS4 Pro can download 4K video from service platforms such as YouTube and Netflix, but cannot support 4K Blu-ray playback like the Xbox One S.
Price: 1TB version, USD 399/349 GBP
Nintendo NX (listed on March 2017)
Nintendo NX
Specifications: Not yet confirmed. It has been reported that Nintendo will use the Nvidia Tegra processor (the cheaper mobile phone processor). There are also rumors that it is possible to use a more powerful RadeonHD RX 200 GPU with 4.60 teraflops (teraflops per second).
Price: Unknown, but Nintendo usually controls manufacturing costs to ensure a retail price acceptable to the public.
Evaluation: There is very little information about the upcoming NX industry. Some commentators believe that it will have the characteristics of a handheld game console and a home game console, with its own display and a removable handle. Players can carry NX with them or insert it into the connected device so that they can operate on the TV.
Xbox: Scorpio (winter 2017)
Xbox Scorpio
Specifications: Unknown, but experts believe it will be equipped with an 8-core processor and more than 320g of storage bandwidth. Microsoft claims that image processing performance will reach 6 teraflops (teraflops per second).
Evaluation: Microsoft called this project "the strongest game console in history", which seems to be the case in terms of parameters - the equipped image processor will be significantly better than the PS4 Pro. It will support 4k games and videos, but it is not yet known whether the game can run at the full 4k standard of 60fps (or more than 30fps). VR is also the main point of view of this game, but at the moment it is still unknown which head of the Scorpio plan will support. All Xbox One games can operate on the Scorpio project and the Xbox One S, but the Scorpio plan player's game performance will be significantly improved.
Price: Unknown, estimated at around £399.
