The market's focus on the next generation of display technology has been focused on AMOLED (OLED for display), and the limelight is getting more and more popular. Some institutions predict that small-size AMOLED investment will increase year by year, and by 2020, production capacity will grow at a high speed of 20~30% per year. Nowadays, the application of smart phones has already been opened. In the future, AMOLED will have its development opportunities in TV, tablet and even emerging virtual reality devices.
Mr. Qiu Yubin, a subsidiary of Jibang Technology, explained the trend of AMOLED in the snowball interview. From the different aspects of specifications, technology, materials, market, production capacity and regional competition, the development of OLED is the star of tomorrow.
Domestic manufacturers and their competitive position
Q: Excuse me, from the perspective of technology and production capacity, what is the most likely opportunity for Chinese manufacturers to catch up with the Korean OLED factory in the short term?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: China's current mass production process in AMOLED is the fastest. Hehui Optoelectronics relies mainly on a 4.5-generation production line. The production capacity is relatively limited, and there is still much room for improvement in yield.
However, the development of new technologies and new investments requires stable financial assistance, technical team support and a long-lasting customer base. From these two conditions, Tianma, which has just entered the heavy volume stage, and BOE, which intends to enter AMOLED from LTPS in the future, The medium and long term development may be relatively worth looking forward to.
And Visionox and Guoxian are biased towards the division of labor in the supply chain. The front-end AMOLED panel is manufactured by Visionox, and the latter module is handed over to Guoxian. Although Visionox has invested a lot of time, it has not entered the mass production stage, and it does not see the time schedule of specific heavy volume.
Q: What are the advantages of Zhongying Electronics in the AMOLED industry? Is the technical barrier strong?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: Compared with Samsung's display, there has been a careful layout under the luminescent materials, patents and equipment. The driver IC is at least not a dense and non-ventilated block.
Domestic focus on the development of OLED driver ICs is very few, as long as the manufacturers have a slight advantage, even if the products are currently only available on low-end HD products, at least have the opportunity to develop with the future domestic AMOLED investment.
Q: To what extent is domestic OLED technology mastered and how competitive can it be?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: Domestic AMOLED should enter the stage of mass production at the beginning of the year, but it is still focused on the lower-end HD resolution products. In terms of the supply chain, in addition to the slight layout of the driver IC, the mastery of other materials, components, and even equipment is still very low.
Q: Which company has the same level of core technology as Japanese companies?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: Strictly speaking, the core technology and competitiveness of AMOLED are in the hands of Hanshang Samsung. Although Japanese manufacturers such as JOLED or Sharp have claimed to have technology and patents, they have not yet entered the mass production stage, and Samsung has shown There is still a big gap in the maturity. As for the domestic aspect, there is currently no company with a technically competitive global layout.
Q: In the industry chain, where is our advantage?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: There are three huge thresholds for entering AMOLED, which are capital, technical capabilities, key equipment and materials. Compared with Taiwan or Japan, the mainland has at least limited restrictions on capital investment. This is the first advantage.
Secondly, AMOLED is renewed, and it still needs to be sold smoothly. Similar to the LCD situation, the domestic market still provides a potentially huge market, as the strongest and strong backing of the manufacturer's investment.
As patent barriers have been formed, the future development of Chinese manufacturers on AMOLEDs is still the most potential of panel manufacturers. The materials and equipment are limited by patents.
Q: Is OLED not basically all Samsung production? How many markets can other domestic manufacturers share?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: At present, Samsung shows more than 95% of the market for small-size AMOLEDs, while large-size TV OLEDs are the exclusive business of LGD. The development of domestic manufacturers in the AMOLED market may have to overcome the problems of equipment/material acquisition, process/production capability, etc. before further discussion of market share.
OLED defects and core technologies
Q: Focus on the shortcomings of restricting OLED applications or the defects that cannot be solved at present.
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: At the same time as the AMOLED technology is touted in the market, in fact, we may also have to pay attention to the problem of AMOLED.
First of all, it is still the problem of luminous efficiency and longevity, and the replacement time of mobile phones is short. This problem is extremely minimized for OLEDs, but it is applied to applications such as IT and even TVs that have been changing cycles for more than five years. Life is still a shortcoming.
Secondly, the resolution improvement of OLED is still inferior to LTPSLCD. Although this part can be compensated by means of pixel calculation, there is still a fundamental limitation.
Third, the challenge of large-scale OLEDs is still high. In addition to mobile applications, there is still a long way to go to enter LCDIT, TV, and even public displays.
Q: It is understood that OLED has two technical directions, evaporation and printing. The former is controlled by South Korea and the latter is controlled by Japan. Which technology is used in China's OLED production? Which companies in China have the equipment to produce OLED production equipment? What are the advantages of domestic OLED production chain?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: The OLEDPatterning process is divided into two types: evaporation and printing (also known as inkjet). Since the current volume of products are based on evaporation technology, domestic manufacturers are now also using the evaporation method to produce OLED. Due to the leadership of Samsung Display, the equipment is currently concentrated in South Korea. For the front-end process equipment, there are no specific and fruitful suppliers in China.
Q: Except for the downstream panel, upstream of the OLED industry chain, such as luminescent intermediates, membrane materials, packaging materials, etc., which are the subdivided products with relatively high technical barriers and high gross profit?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: AMOLED has a very high level of entry regardless of materials or equipment. Among them, the luminescent materials pay attention to life and efficiency, and the patent threshold is the highest. The evaporation process is the soul of AMOLED. At present, in addition to the Japanese business Tokki, there are no other equipment vendors that are competitive enough. Therefore, evaporation is not only a barrier to process capability, but also whether the equipment can achieve the same impact on the progress of mass production.
There are no special thresholds for glass and film packaging materials, but the main key points are process patents and equipment, and most of the equipment is held by Korean manufacturers with close relationship with Samsung. Flexible AMOLED is also a recent show. Because flexible PI substrates require temperature resistance, they are currently almost monopolized by Japanese upstream manufacturers.
Q: Is there an expectation of price increase for intermediates and luminescent materials upstream of OLED this year? Will related companies expand production?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: The luminescent materials personally think that there is not much chance of price increases. In fact, the key to chemical materials lies in formula and patent. In terms of production capacity, key suppliers have already made capacity planning based on the demand of Samsung, the main customer. Under the premise that the probability of out-of-stock problem is extremely low, the possibility of price increase is very low.
Q: Does CSG have the ability to produce OLED glass panels?
WitsView_Qiu Yubin: OLED glass, like LCD glass, requires special formulation requirements and is still in the hands of traditional American and Japanese glass substrate manufacturers.
