Renesas launches ARM Cortex-A15 / A7 CPU quad-core processor

Renesas Communications Technology Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Renesas Communications Technology"), the world's leading and innovative supplier of advanced mobile phone semiconductor solutions and platforms, has recently announced the launch of the next-generation LTE smartphone communications processor platform MP6530. The MP6530 will further expand Renesas ’technology portfolio in the mid- to high-end mobile phone market priced from US $ 200 to US $ 400, and integrate high-performance application processors up to 2GHz and product-proven LTE Cat-4 modems in a single chip on. The processor is based on ARM® big.LITTLE ™ technology, provides users with a wonderful multimedia experience through excellent performance, and its low power consumption can extend the battery life of the device. Samples of the MP6530 platform will be available to Tier 1 OEMs in early 2013.

big.LITTLE combines a high-performance ARM Cortex-A15 â„¢ MPCore â„¢ processor and a low-power Cortex-A7 â„¢ processor, enabling application software to seamlessly switch between the two. As shown in Figure 1, the Cortex-A15 processor can be used to handle computationally intensive applications, such as host games, rendering pages and downloads at speed while browsing the web, and media editing and processing. The Cortex-A7 processor is responsible for efficiently handling most smartphone workloads and background tasks, such as social media and email synchronization, audio or video playback, and other always-on and always-on tasks.

It can also synchronously encode and decode 1080p full HD video and continuously play blockbuster movies. Renesas Communication Technology has also tripled memory performance to support new multimedia features and functions such as Full HD external display and Full HD display over WiFi, allowing more people to watch mobile content on the large screen in the living room.
