WAPI: The International Road suffers from domestic application of cold

The road to WAPI's application for international standards has faltered.

Recently, a message came from the China Wireless LAN Security Standards (WAPI) Industry Alliance. The draft WAPI version 2 text will be discussed with experts from various countries to advance to the next stage. The WAPI Industry Alliance has grown to 79 members, including thousands of products that support WAPI, including the Apple iPhone 4. China's three major telecom operators began to build and deploy wireless LANs, all of which support WAPI.

No one applied to "furnishing"

A survey conducted by the "IT Times" found that in the carrier market, although WAPI has become a standard for wireless devices, WAPI is not actually used.

A wireless operator of the provincial company of the operator told the reporter that the wireless equipment provided by the company to users and the wireless hotspot equipment deployed in public places all support WAPI encryption, but in daily use, WAPI encryption has not been activated, despite the upgrade. The difficulty is not great. According to him, it has not been known that the group company will issue a notice to upgrade WAPI. The person also said that although the current domestic sales of mainstream mobile phones with wireless LAN support WAPI, but there are many users on hand laptops, wireless network cards and parallel phones do not support WAPI. If the wireless device is upgraded to WAPI, this part of the user may be rejected.

Ruijie Networks is one of the members of the WAPI Industry Alliance. Mr. Hou, the company’s technical engineer, told the “IT Times” reporter that his company’s wireless product sales targets are enterprise users and operators. Both support WAPI, but he is responsible for customers. Basically, WAPI encryption is not used. Most of them use WPA and WPA2 encryption methods that directly compete with WAPI.

The reason why operators are not very active in promoting WAPI is that the network equipment provider Huo Yan of Husan Communications Network Products Division has given its own opinion. “At the moment when operators build wireless cities, the wireless hotspots deployed are not encrypted in the user connection part. After the users are connected, the operators identify the user’s identity through portal authentication, and now also use encryption certificates. To ensure network security, for operators, it is to hope that more users will use its wireless network, and it is not important whether WAPI is used for encryption. Bring a certain amount of influence.”

The technical staff of a foreign wireless network product manufacturer told reporters more directly. “No one uses WAPI because many terminals do not support it.”
