It is understood that as early as 2004, Dongjun Laser began to research and develop the sapphire growth process. After experiencing the exploration and comparison of sapphire growth technology such as the lifting method and the bubble method, the company finally formed the “induction heating molybdenum reduction method for high optical quality and large-size sapphire crystal preparation technology†with independent intellectual property rights. Leading the eye to lock the sapphire market
High-tech LED: It is reported that Chengdu Dongjun Laser is currently the largest YAG laser crystal manufacturer in Asia. Can you introduce the product of YAG laser crystal?
Fu Jianwei: whether the scale of production YAG laser crystal, sales volume, or product variety, market share, Tung Chun laser is the domestic industry NO.1.2010年东éªæ¿€å…‰çš„YAG laser crystal domestic market share of about 40%.
At the beginning of the company's establishment in 2001, almost all of the YAG laser crystals produced were used for laser ranging. Since then, the laser ranging market has been growing steadily, while the industrial laser marking, welding, cutting, laser medical and beauty markets are developing rapidly. The company's annual sales of YAG laser crystals also grew from the initial two or three million to nearly 70 million last year. Customers have grown from dozens of companies at the beginning of the company to hundreds of them.
High-tech LED: How does Dongjun Laser focus on sapphire substrates? What made you determined to get involved in the sapphire field?
Fu Jianwei : Since the establishment of Chengdu Dongjun Laser, although the production and sales of YAG laser crystals have been growing steadily, its application market is highly specialized, compared with silicon and polysilicon materials used in large-scale integrated circuits and solar cells. It is relatively small, so we have been actively focusing on other crystal materials and their applications.
Since 2003 we have noticed sapphire crystals that can be used for LED substrate materials. That year I participated in the semiconductor lighting seminar held in Xiamen. Semiconductor lighting is about to enter a high-speed development period, which will bring an opportunity for the wide application of sapphire crystals.
The substrate materials currently used as high-brightness white LEDs are silicon carbide, silicon, and sapphire. Although the matching of silicon carbide and gallium nitride is the best, the ability to mass produce silicon carbide and large-scale production have certain technical difficulties. High-brightness white LEDs with silicon substrate materials are still a long way from industrial production and wide application. The sapphire crystal is currently the most suitable substrate material for large-scale production and high cost performance of high-brightness white LED. Therefore, in 2004, the board of directors decided to establish a project and increase investment in research and development of sapphire.

High- tech LED: How is the growth technology of Dongjun laser sapphire crystal formed?
Fu Jianwei : At the beginning, we used the induction heating lifting method. The growth method of the company YAG laser crystal also uses this technology, and we have a good foundation. It is very smooth to grow sapphire crystals by the pulling method.
However, the pulling method has its shortcomings because it requires the use of hydrazine and the production cost is relatively high; more importantly, with the pulling method, the crystal size is not long and the mass production capacity is limited. Moreover, it is more difficult to directly grow C to the crystal.
We also tested the tungsten-molybdenum alloy bismuth, molybdenum bismuth, and pulling-bubble method under the protective atmosphere. Finally, through continuous process exploration and improvement, we have formed the “induction heating molybdenum crucible falling method for high optical growth with independent intellectual property rights. Preparation technology for mass, large size sapphire crystals." At the same time, the sapphire growth equipment is also designed and developed by us.
High- tech LED: Can you briefly introduce this technology? Is all the sapphire of Dongjun Laser produced by this technology?
Fu Jianwei : At present, all the sapphire of our company is produced by this method. Descent equipment and technology are early and mature. However, for large-size, high-quality sapphire production, we have made many improvements in equipment structure and process technology, and there are many innovations.
In terms of equipment design, crystal growth technology, etc., we have unique places. After the successful development of small-scale trial production, we declared and obtained national invention patents for equipment and technology, and passed the scientific and technological achievements appraisal organized by the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province, which was highly praised by experts.
High- tech LED: Why is Dongjun Laser's sapphire technology team not like some companies, in order to develop rapidly, choose to introduce equipment, technology and talent from the outside, and then can quickly produce products?
Fu Jianwei : We have also considered this. At present, the mainstream growth mode of sapphire crystals is derived from the soaking method of the former Soviet Union (now Russia, Ukraine). We have been to Russia, Ukraine, and talked with crystal and equipment manufacturers. But relatively speaking, first, the equipment is more expensive. Second, this technology needs to rely on external technical teams. Switching to different people to operate the same equipment, in some key technical aspects, there may be obvious differences. At the same time, the dependence on the operator's experience is more serious in key technical aspects such as seeding. But our current equipment and processes eliminate the heavy reliance on operators.

High-tech LED: What is the current capacity of Dongjun Laser's sapphire products?
Fu Jianwei : Our monthly production capacity of sapphire substrate in the first half of this year is about 30,000 mm, and will expand to 70-80,000 mm after June. In the next year, we will complete the construction of the third phase of the new plant and further expand the production capacity to reach an annual output of 4.6 million mm.
At present, the size of our products is mainly 2 inches. 4" and 6" are available in small quantities.
High-tech LED: Sapphire and YAG are two different markets after all. As a new product of the company, how do you establish sales channels and open the sapphire market?
Fu Jianwei : At present, customers in the sapphire market have a process of gradual recognition. We will strengthen the promotion and promotion of the market, using direct sales, customers can directly purchase our crystal garden sticks and already cut crystal wafers.
High-tech LED: What position will the future sapphire products occupy in the company?
Fu Jianwei: Mainstream! Key development direction!
YAG laser crystal production and market scale will continue to develop, but from the market perspective, LED products will enter thousands of households, and sapphire applications will have a larger market.
In the future, the company's sapphire business will grow rapidly and occupy a major share. Therefore, in addition to continuing to expand the YAG laser crystal, the company's strategic focus will be to develop the sapphire market.
The company plans to start construction of the third phase of the new plant in the second half of this year, further expanding the sapphire business to reach an annual output of 4.6 million mm.
